Genealogy: Where you confuse the dead and irritate the living. – Unknown
· The Loyalists, were the colonists, who supported King George III of England and who did not want independence , during the time of the American Revolutionary War. .
· Loyalists, were a mixed group of people comprised of different nationalities, native born Americans, English, Scots, German Hessians and free Blacks.
· NOTE ; There are still many today, that think , the Black man should
· not be considered a Loyalist . I personally disagree.
· Any man who fought in the American Revolution
· for the cause should be entitled to use the title “Loyalist”, certainly if they were free men of color.
· The British, hired Hessian troops for combat duty, during the American Revolution, when no money was left in the coffers after the war, many of the soldiers received land grants, for their services.
· Colonial soldiers were also paid off in land grants. For their loyalty to The Crown and the British cause.
· The soldiers, who were not Loyalists, received free land grants for their services , with no extra benefits/
· Anyone considered a “ Loyalists” were exempt from fees and their children were entitled to claim additional land grants.
1789 Realizing the importance of some type of recognition, on 9 November 1789, Lord Dorchester, the Governor General of British North America, declared "that it was his Wish to put the mark of Honour upon the Families who had adhered to the Unity of the Empire".
